Explanation
Basic function: Marks direction toward which movement occurs
Explanation: This particle indicates the direction of movement, with an emphasis on the direction rather than the specific destination.
Examples:
- Travel: “東京へ行きます” (I’m going to Tokyo)
- Letters/emails: “田中さんへのメール” (An email to Tanaka-san)
- Direction signs: “出口へ” (To the exit)
💡 Notes:
- Despite being written as “へ”, it’s pronounced “e”
- Often interchangeable with に for destinations, but へ emphasizes direction or route, に emphasizes the destination point itself
- に tends to be more commonly used in casual speech, while へ sometimes has a slightly more formal feel or literary feel (Beginners don’t need to worry about this distinction – both work fine for destinations, and you’ll naturally develop a feel for which to use as you gain more exposure to Japanese.)
- Often used in written materials like signs, letters, and formal announcements
