๐Ÿ“ Explanation

๐Ÿ’ฌ How Past Short Forms Work in Real Conversations

Short form predicates in the past tense are used in the same way as the present tense short forms. These forms are super common in casual speechโ€”like chatting with friends or texting. Note that the question particle ใ‹ is dropped in informal speech:

Examples:

  • A: ๅคง้˜ชใŠใŠใ•ใ‹ใซ่กŒใ„ใฃใŸ๏ผŸ (Did you go to Osaka?)
B: ใ†ใ‚“ใ€ๅ…ˆๆœˆใ›ใ‚“ใ’ใค่กŒใ„ใฃใŸใ€‚ๆฅฝใŸใฎใ—ใ‹ใฃใŸ๏ผ (Yes, I went last month. It was fun!)
  • A: ใ‚ใฎๅบ—ใฟใ›ใฎๆ–™็†ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ‚Šใฉใ†ใ ใฃใŸ๏ผŸ (How was the food at that restaurant?)
B: ใพใ‚ใพใ‚ใ ใฃใŸใ€‚้ซ˜ใŸใ‹ใ‹ใฃใŸใ‘ใฉใ€‚ (It was okay. But expensive.)

๐Ÿงฉ Important: Unlike ใ  in present tense, ใ ใฃใŸ is NOT dropped!

Unlike ใ  (present tense), the past tense copula ใ ใฃใŸ is kept even in informal speech.

Example:

  • Present tense (ใ  often dropped):
ใ‚ใฎไบบใฒใจใ€ๅŒป่€…ใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒใ€‚ (That person is] a doctor.)
    ใ‚ใฎ[ๆ˜ ็”ปใˆใ„ใŒ
    ใ€้ข็™ฝใŠใ‚‚ใ—ใ‚ใ„ใ€‚ (That movie [is] interesting.)
  • Past tense (ใ ใฃใŸ is kept):
ใ‚ใฎๆ˜ ็”ปใˆใ„ใŒใ€้ข็™ฝใŠใ‚‚ใ—ใ‚ใ‹ใฃใŸใ€‚ (That movie was interesting.)
    ๆ˜จๆ—ฅใใฎใ†ใ€ๆš‡ใฒใพใ ใฃใŸใ€‚ (Yesterday [I] was free.)

๐Ÿงฉ Response Patterns

In real Japanese conversations, people often:

  • Use ใ†ใ‚“ (yes) and ใ†ใ†ใ‚“ (no) instead of ใฏใ„ and ใ„ใ„ใˆ when speaking casually
  • Answer with just the verb in past form without repeating the subject
  • Add explanatory phrases after the initial response: ้ฃŸใŸในใŸใ€‚ใ™ใ”ใ็พŽๅ‘ณใŠใ„ใ—ใ‹ใฃใŸ๏ผ(I ate. It was really delicious!)

๐Ÿ’ฌ Real Life Usage

  • These short forms are extremely common in anime, manga, and casual Japanese.

  • Youโ€™ll hear:

    • ่กŒใฃใŸ๏ผŸ (Did you go?)

    • ่ฆ‹ใŸ๏ผŸ (Did you see it?)

    • ๅฟ™ใ—ใ‹ใฃใŸ๏ผŸ (Were you busy?)

  • Great for sounding natural and friendly.

  • โ— Use the polite form when speaking to teachers, strangers, or in formal settings.
