๐งฉ Pattern 1: ๏ฝใจๆใใพใ (๏ฝใจใใใใพใ) โ โI think…โ
- Use the short (plain) form of a sentence + ใจๆใใพใใ to say what you (or someone else) thinks.
- Structure: [Short form] + ใจๆใใพใ
- ๐ Example: ๅฝผใฏๆฅใใจๆใใพใใใ (I think he will come.)
Short form of verb: ๆฅใ (kuru) โ to come
ใจ = quotation particle (like โthatโ in English)
ๆใใพใ = “I think”
๐
โโ๏ธ Negating Thoughts:
In Japanese, it’s more natural to say “I think it’s NOT…” rather than “I DON’T think…”. To say you think something is not true, use the negative inside the quote:
- โ
ๅฝผใฏๆฅใชใใจๆใใพใใ (Formal) I think he won’t come.
- โ
ๅฝผใฏๆฅใชใใจๆใใ (Casual) I think he won’t come.
- โ ๅฝผใฏๆฅใใจๆใใพใใใ I don’t think he’ll come. (sounds awkward in Japanese.)
๐ Casual Versions:
โ๏ธ Standard casual:
- ๆฅใใจๆใใใ
I think heโll come.
โ๏ธ Even more casual with ใฃใฆ:
- Example:
- ๆฅใใฃใฆๆใใใI think heโs coming.
- ๆๆฅใฏ้จใฃใฆๆใใI think itโll rain tomorrow.
- In this case:
- ใฃใฆ is a casual version of ใจ
- Used a lot in conversation
- Sounds very natural, especially among friends
๐งฉ Pattern 2: ๏ฝใจ่จใฃใฆใใพใใ (๏ฝใจใใฃใฆใใพใใ) โ โThey said…โ
Use the short (plain) form + ใจ่จใฃใฆใใพใใ to report what someone else said.
Structure: Short form] +ใจ[่จใฃใฆใใพใใใ
- Example:
ใใฎใฌในใใฉใณใฏใใใใใจ่จใฃใฆใใพใใใ
(Someone) said that restaurant is delicious.
- ่จใฃใฆใใพใใ is the past progressive form of ่จใ (to say)โ used when you’re reporting speech.
- Keep the quote in short/plain form, even if you’re being polite overall.
โ๏ธNotes:
- This grammar is great for indirect quotes (someone said something).
- If you werenโt present when they said it (e.g., reading it in a book or hearing it secondhand), you can also use ใจ่จใใพใใ instead of ใจ่จใฃใฆใใพใใ.
๐ Casual version:
- ใใใใใฃใฆ่จใฃใฆใใใโThey said it’s tasty (casual, spoken).
Here, ใฃใฆ is the casual form of ใจ.
่จใฃใฆใ = casual/slurred form of ่จใฃใฆใใพใใ.
๐ก Notes:
- โฐ Tense Preservation: You preserve the original tense of the quoted sentence, unlike in English where you often shift it (e.g., โThere will be a testโ stays as that even if itโs in the past).
- ใจ = formal/neutral, common in writing or polite speech
- ใฃใฆ = casual, super common in speech
- Both go before ๆใใปๆใใพใ, and also before ่จใใป่ใ, etc.
- You can combine it with casual contractions too:
- ใฃใฆๆใฃใฆใ (Iโm thinking…)
- ใฃใฆๆใฃใฆใ (I thought…)
