๐Ÿ“ Explanation

Short forms (also called plain forms) are used in casual speech, informal writing, and are the foundation for many complex grammar patterns.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ How to Make Verb Negative Short Forms

Different rules depending on verb type

  • ใ‚‹-verbs: Drop final ใ‚‹ and add ใชใ„ (้ฃŸในใ‚‹ โ†’ ้ฃŸในใชใ„)
  • ใ†-verbs: Drop the last -u sound and add -anai (ๆ›ธใ โ†’ ๆ›ธใ‹ใชใ„)
  • Irregular verbs: ใ™ใ‚‹ โ†’ ใ—ใชใ„, ใใ‚‹ โ†’ ใ“ใชใ„, ใ‚ใ‚‹ โ†’ ใชใ„
  • Exception: verbs with ใ† ending get ใ‚ instead of ใ‚ (ไผšใ† โ†’ ไผšใ‚ใชใ„)

Here’s a reference table to help you visualize the patterns. If you get the idea already, just ignore it!

โœจ Tips for Remembering

  • For ใ†-verbs, imagine the last syllable moving up one row in the hiragana chart (e.g., ใ โ†’ ใ‹).
  • The only tricky one is ใ† โ†’ ใ‚, because ใ‚ใ† (to meet) becomes ใ‚ใ‚ใชใ„ (doesn’t meet).
  • ใ‚ใ‚‹ is completely irregular. Just memorize: ใ‚ใ‚‹ โ†’ ใชใ„.

๐Ÿงฉ Notes and Real-life usage:

You’ll learn more about how and when the short form is used in the next lesson, so don’t stress about memorizing everything now. Just get the basic idea and you’re good to go!

  1. Casual Conversations: Short forms are essential for sounding natural with friends.
    • ๆ˜ ็”ปใˆใ„ใŒใ‚’่ฆ‹ใฟใ‚‹๏ผŸ (Want to watch a movie?) is much more natural than ๆ˜ ็”ปใˆใ„ใŒใ‚’่ฆ‹ใฟใพใ™ใ‹๏ผŸ๏ผŸ
  2. Mixing in One Conversation: Japanese speakers often shift between forms based on the situation:
    • Starting with polite forms (้•ทใชใŒใ„ใงใ™) when meeting someone
    • Gradually shifting to plain forms (้•ทใชใŒใ„) as the relationship becomes closer
  3. Subordinate Clauses: Even in polite speech, subordinate clauses use plain forms:
    • ๆ˜Žๆ—ฅใ‚ใ—ใŸ่กŒใ„ใไบบใฒใจใฏๆ‰‹ใฆใ‚’ๆŒ™ใ‚ใ’ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚(Those who are going tomorrow, please raise your hand.)
    • Notice: ่กŒใ„ใ (plain form) + polite request (ใใ ใ•ใ„)
  4. Question Forms in Casual Speech: Add ใฎ/ใ‚“ใ  to make questions sound less abrupt:
    • ่กŒใ„ใ๏ผŸ (Are you going?) โ†’ ่กŒใ„ใใฎ๏ผŸ/่กŒใ„ใใ‚“ใ ๏ผŸ (softer: Are you going?)

๐Ÿ’ฌ Real Life Usage

โ“ Quick Note: When do you need ใ  ?

This is something I ran into while learning, so I just want to add a quick note here.ย
For ใช-adjectives and nouns, you must add ใ  in the short (casual/plain) form โ€” but only when ending a positive statement (i.e., when the word is the predicate of the sentence).

โœ… Correct:

  • ๅฝผใฏๆœ‰ๅใ ใ€‚

  • ็งใฏๅญฆ็”Ÿใ ใ€‚

โŒ Wrong:

  • ๅฝผใฏๆœ‰ๅใ€‚๐Ÿšซ (Sounds unnatural unless followed by more info)

๐ŸŸก Donโ€™t use ใ  in these cases:

  • โŒ In negative statements:
    โ€ƒ็งใฏๅญฆ็”Ÿใ˜ใ‚ƒใชใ„ใ€‚โœ… (Not: ใ˜ใ‚ƒใชใ„ใ  โŒ)

  • โŒ In questions:
    โ€ƒๅญฆ็”Ÿใ˜ใ‚ƒใชใ„๏ผŸ โœ… (Not: ใ˜ใ‚ƒใชใ„ใ ๏ผŸ โŒ)

  • โŒ With ใ„-adjectives:
    โ€ƒใ“ใฎๆœฌใฏ้ข็™ฝใ„ใ€‚โœ… (No ใ  needed!)ย

๐Ÿ”‘ Just remember:
ใช-adjective / noun โ†’ needs ใ  at the end in short form
ใ„-adjective โ†’ never needs ใ

๐Ÿ’ก Why This Happens:
  • ใช-adjectives and nouns need ใ  because they can't stand alone as predicates
  • ใ„-adjectives are complete by themselves - they ARE the predicate
