📝 Explanation

marks the subject of a sentence — the person or thing performing the action or being described.

🧠 When to Use が:

1. When introducing new information

→ が emphasizes who or what did something, especially when it’s new to the listener.

(Tanaka won the championship.)

This sentence structure emphasizes that it was Tanaka (not someone else) who won. The speaker knows the listener is aware someone won but doesn’t know it was Tanaka.

2. Used with question words like だれ (who), 何 (what)

Question words like だれ (who), どれ (which), and 何 (what) must use が rather than は:

  • 誰がこの絵を描きましたか。(Who drew this picture?)
(Incorrect)

3. Used in answers to questions with question words

When answering a question with a question word as the subject, the answer also uses

(Which dish is the most delicious?)
(Curry is the most delicious.)

💡 が vs は – What’s the Difference?

Focuses on who or what did somethingSets the topic of the sentence
Used with new info or contrastUsed when the subject is already known or shared
Often used in questionsOften used in statements
“It is X that…”“As for X…”

For example:

(As for the dog, it’s playing in the garden.) Here, the dog is already the topic of conversation.
(It’s a dog that’s playing in the garden.) Here, the fact that it’s a dog (not another animal) is the new information.

💡 Quick Notes for Whoever is learning

  • When you’re unsure, ask yourself: Am I introducing something new or answering a question?
    If yes, try using !
Also, remember: が = spotlight. It highlights what’s important right now in the sentence!
  • Don’t stress too much about the が vs は battle. They both come up a lot, and the more you listen and read, the more it will feel natural over time. Good luck 🐳!
