📝 Explanation

The grammar pattern 〜すぎる is used to express that something is done too much, or to an excessive degree. It can apply to both verbs and adjectives (both い- and な-adjectives).

🔧 Structure:

Verb/adjective stem + すぎる
➡️ Too much / overly / excessively

🛠 How to Form It

Word TypeRuleExample
VerbUse stem formみすぎる → to drink too much
い-adjectiveDrop い and add すぎるあつい → あつすぎる → too hot
な-adjectiveDrop な and add すぎる便利(便利べんりな)→ 便利べんりすぎる → too convenient

✅ Conjugation Tip

すぎる is a regular ru-verb, so it can be conjugated like any other:

  • Past: すぎた
  • Negative: すぎない
  • Polite: すぎます
  • Te-form: すぎて

📝 Important Notes

  • Not necessarily a compliment: すぎる is negative in nuance — it implies “too much to be good”.
    For instance: この部屋へや綺麗きれいすぎて、すわるのがこわいです。
(This room is too clean—I’m scared to sit down._
  • Better alternatives for compliments:
If you simply want to say something is “very” good or “highly” something, use:
    • とても (very)
    • すごく (extremely)
    Example:
    • このカレーはとても美味おいしい → This curry is very delicious.
    • あの選手せんしゅすごくはやい → That athlete is super fast.
