Explanation
The particle は (pronounced “wa”) is one of the most fundamental grammar points in Japanese. It’s called the topic particle because it marks the topic of a sentence.
Basic Functions
- Topic Marker
- Marks the main topic of a sentence
- Indicates what the sentence is about
- Example: 私は学生です (Watashi wa gakusei desu) = “I am a student”
- Contrast Marker
- Shows contrast between two or more items
- Example: 私は行きますが、彼は行きません (Watashi wa ikimasu ga, kare wa ikimasen) = “I will go, but he won’t go”
Examples
- 田中さんは医者です。
(Tanaka is a doctor.)
- 私は寿司が好きです。
(I like sushi.)
- 東京は人が多いです。
(As for Tokyo, there are many people.)
Important Notes
- Unlike が (ga), which marks the grammatical subject, は marks the topic
- The same noun can take different particles depending on its function in the sentence
- は often replaces other particles (を, が) when marking the topic
- When pronouncing は as a particle, always say “wa” (not “ha”)
- The topic marked by は is not necessarily the grammatical subject of the sentence
- Example: 魚は猫が好きです (Sakana wa neko ga suki desu) = “As for fish, cats like it”
- Here, “fish” is the topic, but “cats” is the grammatical subject
- The distinction between は and が can be subtle and takes practice.
Real Life Usage
Native speakers often drop は when the topic is obvious from context
In casual speech, topics are frequently omitted altogether

犬はかわいいです。
Dogs are cute.
日本語は私が勉強しています。
As for Japanese, I am studying it.
映画は子供たちが見ました。
