JLPT N5Basic Structure
Grammar Details
Explanation
Nouns used in sentences generally must be followed by particles, which indicate the relations that the nouns bear to the verbs. These particles are essential elements in Japanese grammar that show how words relate to each other in a sentence.
In this lesson, we’ll start with the particle を (o/wo):
Basic function: Marks the direct object of the sentence—the thing being affected by the verb.
Explanation: This particle indicates what is receiving the action of the verb. It shows what you’re doing something to.
🧪 Examples:
- コーヒーを飲みます。
I drink coffee. - 音楽を聞きます。
I listen to music. - テレビを見ます。
I watch TV.
💡 Notes:
- Even though it’s written as を, it’s always pronounced “お”.
- Never used with stative verbs like ある (to exist) or いる (to be/exist)
- Also marks paths of movement: “道を歩きます” (I walk along the road)
- You’ll see this a lot in daily life. Anything you’re “doing to” something—eating, watching, making, etc.—you’ll likely need を.
Real Life Usage
-
🔹 In casual speech, some particles are often dropped, like を, は, or が — but mostly when the meaning is obvious. Particles like で, に, and へ are usually not dropped, because they’re needed to avoid confusion.
-
🔹 In writing, formal situations, or polite speech, you should still use them. When you’re just starting out, it’s better to include particles, even in casual writing/speaking.
-
🔹 One particle can have multiple meanings, so don’t worry if they seem confusing at first. You’ll get used to them! You should focus on the basic use first, like: に = direction or time, で = place of action, を = direct object.
- 🔹Particles are tricky at first. It’s totally normal to mix them up. As you hear more Japanese (in anime, dramas, apps, or talking to people), your ear will start picking them up naturally 🥹☺️. Don't stress🥸!
