Hello everyone! Have you ever come up with an idea for something new that doesn't exist yet?
5–7
Why is it that we don't have that already? For example, you are suddenly struck with an idea,
8
and then a thought crosses your mind
9–10
that you can get a patent and become a billionaire.
11–12
There are only three possible cases why that "something" doesn't exist.
13
Case one: no one else has thought of it before.
14
Here, you can become the true inventor.
15–17
Case two: someone had thought about it but wasn't able to make it happen. That's why it doesn't exist.
18
Such ideas tend to become viable with technological advances
19
and you see examples of this in cartoons and films.
20–21
Case three: there is no need for it. No one wants it so it doesn’t exist.
22
This often happens to corporations and researchers.
23
You think you've invented something promising
24–25
but it tends to lack a practical value, which is why it doesn't exist.
26
You simply have misjudged its value.
27
But it's hard to face the music and you can't easily give up
28–29
seeing yourself as the inventor you want to become.
30
Even if the reality starts to dawn on you,
31
you would still be fixated on getting patents
32
and wouldn't stop attempting to create something new.
33
Some crazy people would be driven by nonsensical mantras
34
like "the whole point is to create something funny,"
35
or "the show must go on."
36
I'm a quintessential example.
37
(Laughter)
38
Very good! That was the only part you are supposed to laugh.
39
(Laughter)
40
There is one thing I'm particular about.
41
I’ve invented many things
42
which you might find it hard to see any use in.
43
But what would you do first
44
when you have been asked to build a pyramid, for example:
45–46
Would you start with deciding how high you want to make it? Or which direction it should face, or materials, or designs?
47–48
What I focus on first and foremost is what should be the icing on the top.
49
I don’t think about the pyramid itself until later.
50
I work on the icing on the top first.
51
And once I've come up with an amazing idea,
52
then I put all my effort into building the pyramid.
53
You might call this approach
54
nothing more than "playfulness" in a professional context,
55–56
but I consider this of utmost importance for anything one engages in.
57–59
As a child, I always dreamed of living in a house full of electric tools. The three must-have consumer electronics are a TV, refrigerator, and a washer.
60
But in my house, we have a different selection:
61
number one - a lathe, yes, in a family home.
62
(Laughter)
63
Number two - a milling machine, which weighs 2.4 tonnes,
64
and number three - a welder.
65
The most fundamental rule of inventing is to cut and glue.
66
I'm a weirdo who can’t live without those tools around me.
67
(Laughter)
68
Now, let me go through just nine examples out of myriad of my creations.
69
You're now seeing a fully-automatic window cleaning robot I created in 1998.
70
We all know about robot vacuum cleaners that move around the house,
71
but my idea came from my aversion to wiping windows to clean.
72
It can also be used as an advertising tool
73
sticking on a wall in a show room, which I added as a playful feature.
74
This is my creation from 2000, a suitcase you can take with hands off.
75
I was sick of having to carry my suitcase on my trips abroad,
76
which motivated me to work really hard to build this robot.
77–79
It follows you everywhere keeping on your side using a sensor. Here is its playful feature:
80
when it hits a bump on the road, it does a wheelie
81
while keeping balance to go over obstacles.
82
To demonstrate what it can do,
83
you get to specifically go down a bad road.
84
(Laughter)
85
That's the perk of this invention.
86
This vehicle is from 2001, two months before the Segway was released.
87
I got the inspiration when pushing my child in a stroller.
88
I thought, "What if a stroller stood up and moved after you collapse it?"
89
That lead to this vehicle that can balance itself
90
to move around and parallel park smoothly.
91–92
That is the vehicle I developed that year and we managed to do a demo run.
93–94
Then in 2002, I made this all-direction electric vehicle in the shape of "omusubi," a typical Japanese snack made of rice.
95
I named it "Omusubi".
96
As you can see, I had more meat on my bones.
97
I was 20kg heavier than I am now.
98
It was probably because of work-related stress.
99
(Laughter)
100
We have a family inside joke of calling this state
101
"futo-ress" [fat and stress].
102
(Laughter)
103
I was literally fat-reseed at the time.
104–105
The playful part of this invention is that you step forward in any direction, and the vehicle will know which way to go
106
by sensors embedded on the surface which look like sesame seeds,
107
typical condiments we use on omusibis.
108
It looks cute doesn't it?
109
In 2004, I created "Kuru-kuru-rin" [spinning around],
110
another all-direction vehicle using a double layer of wheels
111–112
that counter rotate to move in any direction you like.
113
It wasn't about designing it to move in all directions,
114–115
but achieving the functionality of idling in one spot without stopping while all the wheels are spinning around.
116
That was the biggest technical challenge I faced in developing it.
117
My research is all about the tail wagging the dog.
118–119
(Laughter) Then I did "Rokkaku-kun" [Mr. Hexagon],
120–121
a robot with hexagonal legs unlike a human's,
122
with only one arm, which it uses to hang on to something with,
123
to get down to the floor like monkeys do.
124–126
It has unusual looks, and when it does bipedal walking it uses the arm to help maintain its balance by calculating the inertia in relation to its body posture.
127–128
I often get asked why I didn't give it two arms
129
because everyone looks at it and thinks it's out of balance.
130
But that's not true. My grandfather lost one arm during the war time.
131–132
Despite the limitations from amputation, he was quite capable of a lot of things.
133
So I looked up to him and realised that having both arms
134
doesn't necessarily mean you have good balance.
135
That motivated me to create this robot which can walk with one arm.
136–137
Then fast-forward to 2006, what you are seeing now is called "Moon".
138–139
Some of you might have seen this vehicle at Tokyo Motor Show or CEATEC.
140
To give you an idea how it was designed, I started with the outer parts,
141
then designed the rest later.
142
The crucial element was the diameter of outer wheels.
143–144
I decided it had to be one third of the diameter of a Sumo ring.
145–146
Then I consecutively designed the rest of the vehicle accordingly.
147
The playful part of this invention
148
is the wings on the back that work as indicators.
149–150
In the following year, I came up with the idea of a single caterpillar-wheel-vehicle
151
that allows you to access all sorts of landscapes.
152
What came out was one which you don't only ride on,
153–154
but also can be controlled remotely keeping itself in balance.
155–156
The caterpillar was actually built with conveyer rails used in canteens.
157
I thought, "What is it like to sit and travel around on that conveyer?"
158
(Laughter)
159–160
The caterpillar was made of such belts to make that quirky fantasy come true.
161–163
The year after, I started talking nonsense like "I believe I can fly!",
164
and that resulted in this one-person, counter-rotating helicopter.
165
It's a folding helicopter which needs only eight screws to assemble,
166–167
and it neatly fits into a wooden heli-box after dissembling.
168
The maximum propellers tip speed is 510km per hour.
169
This test pilot was 53 years old.
170
I recruited a middle-aged man to be my pilot because I thought
171
it was too dangerous a job for younger people with a bright future.
172
(Laughter)
173
So I decided on this middle-aged gentleman
174
and literally asked him, "Will you die for me, old man?"
175
(Laughter)
176
Just kidding.
177–178
I kept on tinkering and creating various robots
179
until the 2011 disaster hit Japan.
180
I quit participating in robot competitions I used to love so much,
181
quit motorcycle racing, and left my tennis club
182
because I decided to start a PhD.
183
I had just hit 40 at the time.
184–186
This is Professor Inaba, my supervisor at the lab. Raise your hand if you've never heard about him before.
187
None. Thank you.
188
He is regarded as one of "the world's foremost roboticists."
189
I asked him to join me in creating robots that help change the world for the better
190
and joined his robotics lab as a PhD student.
191–192
I've failed already, unapologetically, and am still going forward.
193
I'm still a student.
194
I've recently developed this robot as part of my studies,
195
a multi-domain flying robot that travels by air, land and sea.
196–197
Basically, I wanted one that can travel on the land and move through narrow spaces even if it has to go on the water in the aftermath of the tsunami.
198
A robot that can fly wasn't enough.
199–200
I ultimately wanted my robot to reach places through narrow spaces,
201–202
where regular drones wouldn't be able to reach.
203–204
That resulted in 2012's "MUWA" which includes a meaning "dream ring",
205
and is an acronym for what you can call it in English:
206–207
"Multi-field Universal Wheel for Air-land vehicle."
208
It can hover off the ground with whichever face up,
209
and record a video from up to 250 meters high.
210
It can also go to a given GPS position and drop a life preserver.
211
It's essentially a quadcopter, with a built-in technology
212
to change the propeller angle itself enabling its intended functions.
213
I went through a long process of trial and error.
214–215
The prototype would fall off 100 times a day, but eventually,
216
we managed to make it capable of standing still on a tiny surface,
217
and falling, and rotating, then standing up again.
218–219
The latest model can do these odd - sorry, elegant moves.
220–221
With these functions, I wanted to realise my original goal.
222
Rolling like a normal Tyre consumes
223
only one tenth of the electricity required for flying,
224
allowing it to travel closer to its destination.
225
However, my ultimate goal for this drone - to go through the angled cracks -
226
couldn't be achieved without a further function:
227–228
to be able to roll along while keeping any given angle.
229
We paid great attention to including a program
230–231
so that it could stand up at that angle from any position. Let me quickly show you the culmination of this research,
232
a combination of all the moves I've just shown you.
233
When you switch it on, it stands up by itself
234–236
and rolls around like a self-balancing unicycle. It includes a camera attached to the core of the body
237–238
so that it can process images and detect an uneven surface.
239
Normally, if it rolls on like this,
240
- as the space between the legs of the ladder is angled -
241
ouch, it can't go further than the ladder.
242
it adjusts its posture by tilting itself to match the angle of the space,
243
keeps that posture and moves forward.
244
I believe that is a novel technology
245–247
that distinguishes this from other flying robots. Now watch how it carries out sensing of the location and comes back.
248
At the last stage of its development,
249–250
we designed a technology to remember the angle of the space it has experienced
251
and go through it smoothly without bumping into it on the way back.
252–253
In 2013, we ventured to improve it further so you can operate it on the water.
254
Its shell is made of polystyrene,
255
so it floats on the water, and can freely circle around.
256
That's not all it can do.
257
It can go between the legs of this ladder even it there isn't much space there,
258
and can go around it as well.
259
The idea was to enhance
260
its capabilities to access diverse disaster-affected locations.
261
However, all that still wasn't good enough for me.
262
I wanted to further add a survey function.
263
So what it does is once it’s in the target structure,
264
it records an areal view of the room first.
265–266
Then surveys the situation from the floor while rolling around standing upright.
267
By fine-tuning the position to hover between available spaces like this
268
it can take 3D measurements of inside a structure.
269–270
This allows you to gather comprehensive 3D measurement data of the entire room.
271
With the drone, you can have a good look of important checkpoints
272
like shafts behind a large factory machine and its valves for example,
273
which can't be examined unless you go inside.
274
These are the technologies I've worked to develop.
275
The things I've been doing, researching and developing robot technologies,
276
if you look at them,
277
they can potentially be applied to military robots
278
since these technologies are very purpose-specific.
279
But I'm determined
280–283
that this robot must serve as a technology to make peace. So, fellow roboticists in the audience today,
284
I hope we all agree we are going to do our best
285
in creating robots that help promote peace with these new technologies.
286
That's my wish.
287
I can see a lot of younger faces in the audience today
288
- and some more mature ones - of course I'm not excluding you.
289
I would like to leave you all with this:
290
in any field of research and in any domain of work,
291
no effort is entirely useless.
292–293
I believe that playfulness is central to making innovation happen.
294
If you are serious about succeeding in your creative work,
295
you can't do without playfulness.
296–299
Another important point I want to make is that you only live once. Dedicate your only life you are given in pursuing what you really love.
300
Do your best to prepare the environment for that.
301
Whatever it may take, be it more studying,
302
or honing your engineering skills, or making connections,
303
it is essential to spare no effort to make your environment
304–305
more supportive in pursuing creativity. "Believe in your potential and never give up."
306
I've always lived by this motto to get where I am now.
307–309
If it resonates with you at all, I invite you to let your playfulness lead your life-long passions.
310
以上です
Thank you.
311
(Applause)
312
You know what?
313
[That ending was too ordinary!] (Laughter)
314
A self-proclaimed weirdo like me won't leave you without a showtime.
315
お~
Audience: Whoa!
316
(Applause)
317
Koji Kawasaki: It will make a buzzing noise -
318
but please bear with me.
319–321
(Propellers buzzing) As you see, it's capable of a very stable hover. You'll see the TEDx branding projected on its body.
322
You can easily fly it around as you like.
323–324
That was no different to common drones,
325
but let me activate its another feature.
326
Now it's calculating the angle it will stand at.
327
Look how it can spin around.
328
If you kick it, it still maintains its poise.
329–330
It can stand at any given angle and stay in the posture.
331
And it can roll around keeping the same angle.
332
Thank you very much.
333
(Applause)
