Adjective/Noun + の
JLPT N5Basic Structure
Grammar Details
Explanation
When you’re trying to avoid repeating a noun in Japanese, の becomes your best friend. Think of it like saying “one” in English — instead of repeating the thing you’re talking about, you just say “the red one” or “Mary’s one.” 💡
🔶【Pattern ①】Adjective + の = “The ___ one”
When you already know what noun you’re talking about, you can just say the adjective + の to sound natural and avoid repeating the same word.
🧢 Example:
- 新しいぼうしを買いました。
青いのと白いのです。
(I bought new hats. A blue one and a white one.)
💬 Casual tip: You’ll hear this at stores all the time.
Customer:「小さいのありますか?」= “Do you have a small one?”
Clerk:「ありますよ〜」= “Yes, we do!”
🔶【Pattern ②】Noun + の = Possession or classification
Use this to show ownership, categories, or descriptions — like “my pen,” “Tokyo’s ramen,” or “student ID.”
📱 Example:
- それは妹のです。
(That’s my little sister’s.)
Here, の replaces a known noun like スマホ (smartphone) or ほん (book).
🍜 Example:
- 東京のラーメンは福岡のより濃いです。
(Tokyo ramen is richer than Fukuoka’s.)
You can totally switch out “ramen” with:
- カフェ (cafés)
- バス (buses)
- 先生 (teachers… lol yes, sometimes we compare 😂)
🎉 Real-life takeaway
Once you master の, you’ll sound way more fluent and save breath! Plus, Japanese people use it constantly in real convo, so recognizing it will help your listening too. 😎
