Grammar Details
Explanation
🔧 Pattern:
👉 [verb (short, present)] + つもりだ (I intend to do…)
👉 [verb (short, negative)] + つもりだ (to say you don’t intend to do something)
💬 What does it mean?
It expresses what you plan or intend to do in the future.
Also works with the past tense to describe intentions that didn’t happen.
🧢 Example 1 – Positive intention:
- 来週から毎朝走るつもりです。
(I intend to run every morning starting next week.)
💪 Let’s be real, it might last 3 days tops… but we always mean it when we say it.
💤 Example 2 – Negative intention:
- きょうは出かけないつもりです。
(I don’t intend to go out today.)
🛏️ Introverts, unite — at home.
📅 Example 3 – Past intention that didn’t happen:
- 映画を見るつもりでしたが、寝てしまいました。
(I was planning to watch a movie, but I fell asleep.)
😴 Classic weekend story.
🎓 Quick Notes:
- Use plain form before つもりだ
→ e.g. 食べるつもり、行かないつもり - Works with both affirmative and negative verbs
- Past form: つもりでした = “was planning to…”
Examples

I intended to eat vegetables tonight, but ended up eating pizza.
きょうは出かけないつもりです。

I intended to study Japanese, but I watched anime instead. (💬 Technically... still Japanese learning, right? 😅)
