JLPT N5Basic Structure
Grammar Details
Explanation
Want to say things like:
“It’s getting cold.”
“I became healthy.”
“She became a teacher.”
You’ll need the verb なる, which means “to become.”
This is how you use it with adjectives and nouns 👇
🔧 How it works:
| Type | Rule | Example Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| い-adjective | Drop い + くなる | スープが冷たくなった。 | The soup became cold. |
| な-adjective | Keep it + に + なる | 友だちが元気になった。 | My friend became energetic. |
| Noun | Noun + に + なる | 兄は先生になりました。 | My older brother became a teacher. |
🔁 Want to say “more than before”?
Add 前より to show comparison!
- 日本語が前より上手になった。
→ My Japanese has gotten better than before! 💪
🚫 Common mistake:
❌ 寒いになる
✅ 寒くなる ← (The い-adjective must change to くなる!)
🎯 Try it yourself!
What has changed for you recently?
- 勉強が楽しくなった。→ Studying has become fun.
- 静かになったね。→ It’s become quiet, huh?
Use this pattern in daily convo — super useful for describing feelings, weather, or progress in Japanese! 🇯🇵✨
📝 Note:
You’ll often see 〜なる used in the past tense (なりました) because people usually talk about something that already changed.
For example, “It became cold,” or “I became sleepy.”
If you want to talk about something that happens often or in the future, use the present polite form (なります).
- 寒くなりました = It became cold
- 寒くなります = It gets cold (in winter)
