Explanation
Now that you’ve learned 何か and 何も, let’s move on to how to talk about “somewhere” and “not anywhere” in Japanese!
🧠 Pattern Table:
| Thing | Person | Place |
|---|---|---|
| なにか (something) | だれか (someone) | どこか (somewhere) |
| なにも (not anything) | だれも (not anyone) | どこも (not anywhere) |
💡 Use these with proper particles (に, へ, で), and remember:
- 〜か = some / any
- 〜も (+negative) = not any / no __ at all
🔧 Particle Notes:
- You still use に, へ, で depending on the verb
- You don’t use は, が, or を with these words
🗣 Example Sentences:
🧭 Going somewhere
A: どこ]かへ[行きましたか?
(Did you go anywhere?)
B: いいえ、どこ]へも[行きませんでした。
(No, I didn’t go anywhere.)
💡 “へ” is used with movement verbs like 行く
👀 Meeting someone
A: だれ]かに[会いましたか?
(Did you meet anyone?)
B: いいえ、だれ]にも[会いませんでした。
(No, I didn’t meet anyone.)
💡 “に” is used with 会う (to meet)
🔧 Doing something
A: 何かしましたか?
(Did you do anything?)
B: いいえ、何もしませんでした。
(No, I didn’t do anything.)
💡 You don’t need を here. The “も” replaces it.
📝 Casual Notes:
- Don’t stress over particles — just look at the verb!
- These patterns are very common in daily life and polite conversation
- Great for answering questions like “Did you go out? Did you see anyone?”
