[Noun (tool/means)] + で + Action
で
JLPT N5Basic Structure
Grammar Details
Explanation
Use で to describe how something is done — like the tools, transportation, or languages used.
🧠 Pattern:
[Noun (tool/means)] + で + Action
✏️ What kind of nouns?
- Tools (e.g. chopsticks, pen)
- Language (e.g. Japanese, English)
- Transport (e.g. bus, train, bike)
- Media/instruments (e.g. TV, phone)
🗣 Example Sentences:
🍚 1. はし]で[ご飯を食べます。
→ We eat rice with chopsticks.
💬 2. 日本語で話しましょう。
→ Let’s talk in Japanese.
🚲 3. じてんしゃで学校に行きます。
→ I go to school by bicycle.
📱 4. スマホで音楽を聞きます。
→ I listen to music on my smartphone.
📝 Note:
- で = “by / with / using”
- It’s NOT used for location of existence — that’s に or で, depending on context
- You can often answer the question:
どうやって?(How?)
❓Can we drop で?
Nope, not usually.
You need で when you’re describing how something is done (by what tool/method). If you drop it, the sentence may sound confusing or unnatural.
Example:
🆗 はし]で[食べます = I eat with chopsticks
🚫 はし][食べます = ❓ “Chopsticks eat?” (This makes no sense)
So yeah — keep that で when you’re showing the tool/method used.
