📝 Explanation

🧱 Basic Construction:

Verb stem + たいです

Just take the verb in its ます-form, chop off the ます, and add たい!

The grammar form ~たい is a super useful and beginner-friendly way to express your desire to do something!

📝 Examples

  • カフェでゆっくりしたいです。
I want to relax at a cafe.
  • 明日はあたらしいくつ買いかいたい
I want to buy new shoes tomorrow.
  • 友達ともだちはなしたくないです。
I don’t want to talk with my friend.

📒 Particle Note:

Verbs that normally take can take either or with ~たい.

📍 ほんみたいです。
📍 ほんみたいです。

Other particles (like に、で、へ) remain unchanged.

📌 Conjugation Tip: ~たい is an い-adjective!

That means you can conjugate it like this:

  • Negative:
→ はなしたくない (don’t want to talk)
  • Past:
     → きたかった (wanted to go)
  • Negative Past:
→ べたくなかった (didn’t want to eat)

🧠 “I’ve wanted to…”

If your desire has been ongoing for some time, you can use: ~たいとおもっています

  • 留学りゅうがくしたいとおもっています。
    I’ve wanted to study abroad.

🚫 You ≠ Them: Expressing others’ wants

You can’t use ~たい directly to talk about what someone else wants — because it expresses your own desire.

So how do we talk about others’ wants?

✅ Report what someone said:

~たいとっていました
例: メアリー]さんは[チベット]に[行きたいとっていました。
Mary said she wanted to go to Tibet.

If you saw it or sensed it

Use ~たがっています to describe what someone seems to want — based on their actions or feelings.

  • メアリー]さんは[着物きものたがっています。
Mary seems to want to wear a kimono.

This is used when:

  • You see it in their behavior (e.g. looking at the kimono, talking about it a lot)
  • You’re guessing based on what they’re doing or showing
  • 💡 Think of ~たがっています as:
“It looks like they want to…” or “They’re acting like they want to…”

🧠 たがる is an う-verb and always takes the particle , unlike ~たい which allows too.

💬 Real Life Usage

🧠 Real-Life Tips:

1. “たいです” is about YOU

Don’t use ~たい to describe someone else’s desire directly.

❌ [トム]さんは[寿司|すし]を[食べたい|たべたい]です。
✅ [トム]さんは[寿司|すし]を[食べたい|たべたい]と[言っていました|いっていました]。 (Tom said he wants to eat sushi.)
✅ [トム]さんは[寿司|すし]を[食べたがっています|たべたがっています]。 (Tom seems to want to eat sushi.)

Use ~たがっています for observed desires, or ~たいと[言|い]っていました to report what someone said.

2. Politeness

たいです is polite, but in casual speech you’ll often hear:

  • たい
コンビニ[行|い]きたい!(I wanna go to the convenience store!)
  • たくない
     [宿題|しゅくだい]やりたくない~ (I don’t wanna do homework~)

3. Set Phrases You'll Hear Often

  • [会|あ]いたい! (I want to see you!)
  • [飲|の]みたいな~ (I feel like drinking...)
  • [帰|かえ]りたい。(I wanna go home.)
  • [遊|あそ]びたくない。(Don’t wanna hang out.)

These are super common in texting or casual chat 💬
