📝 Explanation

In the previous lesson, we learned demonstrative location words like ここ (here), そこ (there), あそこ (over there), and どこ (where?). These allowed us to talk about places in relation to the speaker and listener.

Now today we’re expanding our vocabulary to describe the position of one object relative to another using expressions like “X is in front of Y” and other directional relationships.

Basic Pattern: X は Y の [location word] です

  • X is [location word] of Y
  • Example: ホテルは駅の前です (The hotel is in front of the station)

Location Words:

漢字 (Kanji)ひらがな (Hiragana)English Meaning
みぎto the right of
ひだりto the left of
まえin front of
後ろうしろbehind
なかinside
うえon / above
したunder / beneath
近くちかくnear / nearby
となりnext to (same type)

Between Expression: X は Y と Z のあいだです

  • X is between Y and Z
  • Example: レストランはスーパーと病院の間です (The restaurant is between the supermarket and the hospital)

📝 Notes / Tips:

  • This pattern is super useful when giving or asking for directions, especially in Japan where places are often compact and signs can be tricky.
  • Existence vs. Description: います/あります – used for existence and location, です – used for describing attributes.
  • If someone asks:
ぎんこう は どこ ですか?(Ginkou wa doko desu ka? → “Where is the bank?”)
You can use this pattern to answer:
ぎんこう は コンビニ の となり です。(“The bank is next to the convenience store.”)
  • の (no) is the particle that connects Y (the reference object) with the location word. Think of it like saying “the [location] of Y” — e.g., “on top of the desk” = つくえ うえ.
  • Using with Verbs: when combining location expressions with action verbs, you need the particle で to indicate where the action takes place:
Basic Pattern: [Place] + で + [Action Verb]
スーパーの隣でコーヒーを飲みました。(I drank coffee next to the supermarket.)

💬 Real Life Usage

Japanese people often give directions using landmarks rather than street names. Stores, stations, and recognizable buildings are commonly used reference points
