  • 👉 Adjectives follow different conjugation patterns, but don’t worry about them for now — you’ll learn how adjectives work in a later chapter. For this lesson, just focus on using でした and じゃなかったです with nouns.

💬 Real Life Usage

  • The casual/plain form without です would be じゃない(present), じゃなかった (past).
  • Regional variations exist (especially in Kansai where へんかった might be heard.
  • 🧾 You can simply focus on learning じゃないです (present) and じゃなかったです (past) as your go-to negative forms. These are natural, commonly used in conversation, and polite enough for most situation
  • The other nagative forms are mentioned just so you’re aware they exist when you encounter them in textbooks or formal settings, but you don’t need to actively use them in your early speaking practice.
