Explanation
🧱 What does ~でしょうか mean?
Use ~でしょうか when:
- You’re asking a polite, tentative question
- You want to avoid sounding direct or rude
- You’re making a guess or soft prediction
It’s especially useful when asking something the other person might not know, or when you want to be extra courteous. It adds a tone of gentleness, respect, or uncertainty — very useful in polite speech!
🔧 Structure:
(Short form) + でしょうか?
➡️ Would it…? / Do you suppose…?
🛠 How to Form It
Attach でしょうか to the short form of a verb, adjective, or noun.
| Part of Speech | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb (plain) | Verb + でしょうか | 来るでしょうか? |
| い-adjective | い-adjective + でしょうか | 暖かいでしょうか? |
| な-adjective | な-adjective (no な) + でしょうか | 静かでしょうか? |
| Noun | Noun (no だ) + でしょうか | 学生でしょうか? |
❗ When used with nouns or な-adjectives, do not add だ before でしょうか.
🔎 でしょう vs でしょうか
| Form | Use Case | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 〜でしょう (no か) | Guess / assumption | It will probably rain. |
| 〜でしょうか | Polite question | Will it rain? |
🧠 Bonus: Add たぶん for Guesses
When you’re guessing, add たぶん at the start:
- たぶん明日は寒くないでしょう。
I bet it won’t be cold tomorrow. - たぶん間違いないでしょう。
It’s probably correct.
📝 Tips for Usage
- Use 〜でしょうか in business emails, polite conversation, or when asking a stranger.
- If you’re confident, drop the か and just use でしょう.
- In casual speech, でしょう turns into でしょ, often with a rising tone.
