📝 Explanation

📚 Meaning:

Use the 〜て-form of verbs to connect multiple actions in order, like saying “and then…” or “after that…” in English.

🧩 Structure:

[Verb in て-form], [Verb in て-form], … [Final verb]

  • The final verb decides the tense and politeness.
  • Think of the 〜て-form like a comma connecting actions.
  • It cannot be replaced by と (to), which only connects nouns

Example:

  • ともだちにって、映画えいがて、ばんごはんをべた。
➝ I went to the gym, took a shower, and went to bed.
  • ともだちにって、映画えいがて、ばんごはんをべた
➝ I met my friend, watched a movie, and ate dinner.

💡 Advanced Use: Looser Connections

The te-form of a verb can also be used to connect a verb more “loosely” with the rest of a sentence. Rather than simply indicating sequence, it can show how one action serves as the means, reason, or context for another action.

🟦 How something is done (manner/method)

  • バスにって、会社かいしゃきます。
I go to work by bus. (You’re explaining the method of going — by bus.)
  • かさをさして、あるきました。
I walked using an umbrella. (Literally: “Opening an umbrella, I walked.”)

🟦 The context/reason for something (cause-effect relationship)

  • あめって、試合しあい中止ちゅうしになりました。
Because it rained, the game was canceled. (Rain is the reason)
  • 財布さいふとして、おかねがありません。
I lost my wallet, so I don’t have money. (Explains the situation leading to not having money)
  • かれ名前なまえわすれて、ごめんなさい。
Sorry, I forgot his name.(The て-form explains why you’re apologizing.)

📝 Summary

  • Use the て-form to link actions or describe manner/context.
  • Only the final verb gets conjugated.
  • Great for telling stories or explaining reasons.
