🔧 Structure
To say someone is allowed or it’s okay to do something, take the verb in て-form and add もいいです:
[Verb in て-form] + もいいです (It’s okay to… / You may…)
❓ Asking for Permission
- Just turn the phrase into a question by adding
This is like saying “Is it alright if I…?” or “May I…?”
May I go to the bathroom? -
May I take a short break?
🗣️ How to Reply
If someone asks for permission with 〜てもいいですか, here’s how you can answer:
- Polite, normal:
– Yes, that’s fine.
– Please, go ahead. (This is a graceful and friendly way to say yes!)
- 📝 Important: You can’t just reply something like てもいいです without a verb in front.
Wrong: ❌
Right: ✅ 座ってもいいです (You may sit.), ✅いいです - If you want to be super brief in casual speech, just say:
うん、いいよ。 – Yeah, that’s fine.
– Sure.
💡 Notes
- In casual speech, you can drop the も and say just 〜ていい?
(Can I come in?)
→ 食べていいです is fine, just like 食べてもいいです - Add よ for encouragement or reassurance:
→ 使ってもいいですよ! (You can use it, really!)
🚫 Want to say “You must not…”?
- Use 〜てはいけません (explained in the next post!):
➡️ ここでタバコを吸ってはいけません。
You must not smoke here.
