📝 Explanation

The て-form is one of the most important verb forms in Japanese. It’s a building block for many grammatical structures like requests, continuous actions, giving/receiving help, permissions, and connecting ideas.

🔧 What is the て-form?

The て-form is a conjugated form of a verb that ends in 〜て or 〜で, depending on the verb. You use it to connect actions, make polite requests, or describe ongoing activities.

🧱 How to Form the て-form

Japanese verbs are grouped into three categories. Let’s break it down:

🟦 Group 1: U-verbs (Godan verbs)

Dictionary Form Endingて-form EndingExampleて-form
, , ってあう (to meet)あって
まつ (to wait)まって
とる (to take)とって
, , んでよむ (to read)よんで
あそぶ (to play)あそんで
しぬ (to die)しんで
いてかく (to write)かいて
いでおよぐ (to swim)およいで
してはなす (to speak)はなして

🧠 Mnemonic:
Think of this chant:
うつるって、ぶむぬんで、くいて、ぐいで、すして!
(It’s nonsense, but it covers all endings. The chant is here )

🟩 Group 2: Ru-verbs (Ichidan verbs)

📍Rule: If the verb ends in 〜る, and the stem before る is an e- or i-sound, just drop る and add て.

たべる (to eat)たべて
みる (to see)みて
おきる (to wake up)おきて

🟨 Group 3: Irregular Verbs

Verbて-form
する (to do)して
くる (to come)きて
🚨 Exception: いく (to go)いって

🧪 Core Uses of Te-Form

  1. Making a request (ください form)
    📍ドアをあけてください。
    → Please open the door.
  2. Connecting actions
    📍あさごはんをたべて、がっこうへいきました。
→ I ate breakfast and went to school.
  3. Progressive form (~ている)
    📍いま、べんきょうしています。
→ I am studying right now.
  4. Asking for permission
    📍ここにすわってもいいですか?
    → May I sit here?
  5. Stating prohibitions: “〜てはいけません” (“You must not…”)

📎 Note: Focus on te-form conjugation rules in this lesson. The five major uses (requests, connecting actions, progressive form, permission, prohibitions) will be covered in detail later.

💡Notes & Tips for Learning and Memorizing

  1. Distinguishing Verb Types: Pay attention to the vowel before the final る to determine if it’s a ru-verb or u-verb.
  2. Avoiding Common Mistakes:
Don’t use ×会いて when it should be 会って
Don’t use ×読みて when it should be 読んで
  3. Learn Verbs as Sets: Memorize the dictionary form, te-form, and masu-form together as a set for each verb.
  4. Practice with Common Phrases: Create and practice with common te-form phrases like 食べてください (please eat) or 見てもいいですか (may I see?).
