🔹 Grammar Point:

In Japanese, counting isn’t as simple as just adding numbers in front of nouns. You need counters — special words that go after the item and are specific to what you’re counting.

Basic Structure

Item + Number + Counter
Example: ペンを五本 (5 pens)

✍️ Study Notes:

  • The number + counter combo comes after the object.
  • Sound Changes: When numbers combine with counters, pronunciation can change:
    一 (ichi) + 枚 (mai) → いちまい (ichimai)
    三 (san) + 本 (hon) → さんぼん (sanbon)
  • Counters depend on the type of item: here are some of the most common word:
    • 枚 (まい / mai): flat things (paper, shirts, plates)
      切符きっぷを二枚にまい買かいました。I bought two tickets.
    • 人 (にん / nin): people
      友達ともだちが四人よにんいます。I have four friends.
    • 個 (こ – ko): For small objects (apples, eggs)
      りんごりんごを三個さんこ食たべました。I ate three apples.
    • 冊 (さつ / satsu): books, magazines, notebooks,

💬 Real Life Usage

  • Common Mistake: Beginners often forget to use counters or use the wrong ones. Using つ (tsu) as a generic counter can work in casual situations when you don't know the specific counter.
  • Age Exception: When stating age, the number comes before 歳 (さい - sai):
    • [私|わたし]は[二十五歳|にじゅうごさい]です。 I am 25 years old.
  • Time Counters: Time has special counters:
    • 3時 (さんじ - san-ji) - 3 o'clock
    • 5分 (ごふん - go-fun) - 5 minutes
    • 2週間 (にしゅうかん - ni-shūkan) - 2 weeks
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Some numbers have superstitious meanings. For example, 四 (し - shi) sounds like "death," so よん (yon) is often used instead.
  • Simplification: In very casual speech among friends, counters are sometimes omitted, but this is not standard Japanese.
