📝 Explanation

「と」 is a particle used in two common ways:

🧩 と = “and” (connecting nouns)

  • You use to connect two nouns, just like “and” in English.
  • Examples:
    • 昨日、映画カフェに行ったよ。
Yesterday, I went to a movie and a café.
    • タコスラーメンが大好き!
Tacos and ramen are my faves!
  • 💡Note:
You can’t use to connect verbs or sentences — only nouns! So no:
    ❌「食べる寝る」
    ✅「ごはんデザート」(food and dessert)

🧩 と = “with someone” (Doing something together)

  • Use to say who you’re doing something with — whether it’s hanging out, studying, or traveling.
  • Examples:
    • 明日、友だちカラオケ行く!
I’m going to karaoke with my friend tomorrow!
    • お母さん料理したよ。
      I cooked with my mom.

🧠 Quick Reminders:

  • と connects nouns only.
  • と shows who you’re with when doing something.
  • In casual convo, you can drop the subject (e.g., わたし) and just say:
    友だちと行った。 (Went with a friend.)
  • If you’re ever unsure which “と” you’re hearing, check the context. If it’s between two nouns, it’s probably “and.” If it’s between a person and a verb, it likely means “with.”
